Fundamental Rights (Article 7)
What?
ü HJ Laski, “are those conditions of life without which
no man can be at the best.”
ü Citizens + State =
reciprocal relationship.
ü Citizens get benefits
from the State and enjoy certain rights, which are fundamental for the
all-round development of an individual.
ü They are known as
Fundamental Rights.
ü Fundamental Rights
guarantees equality to all citizens without discrimination.
ü These rights have
been given in the Constitution and no government can violate or abolish them.
Classification of
Fundamental Rights
Ø Right to Equality
(clauses 1,8,13 and 15)
Ø Right to Freedom of
Speech, Expression and Religion (clauses 2 and 3)
Ø Right to Freedom of
Property (clauses 9 and 10)
Ø Right to Freedom of
Media and Information (clauses 4 and 5)
Ø Right to Freedom of
Vote (clause 6)
Ø Right to Justice
(clauses 16,17,18 and 19)
Ø Restrictions on
Fundamental Rights (clause 20)
If
the Fundamental Rights are denied to the citizens it can lead to discontent, inequality and religious and
racial hatred.
Fundamental Duties (Article 8)
Ø ‘Duty’ means a moral
or legal obligation.
Ø The duties rendered
by citizens to the State for having given the rights for the fullest
development of an individual.
Ø Citizens must fulfill
their obligations towards the State.
Classification of Fundamental Duties
Ø Duty to Nation
Ø Duty to Society
Ø Duty to Humanity
Fundamental
Duties have been enshrined in the Constitution:
v To respect and not
cause harm to others
Ø To render help to the
people and the nation during the times of natural calamities and emergencies.
Ø To serve and defend
the sovereignty of the nation and abide by all the Laws.
Relationship between Fundamental Rights and Duties
ü Like the body and the
soul – Rights and Duties are closely related – two sides of the same coin.
ü The right of one
related to the duty of the other.
ü The State guarantees
protection of the citizens’ enjoyment of his/her rights and it becomes their
duty to serve the State.

Your Duty as a Student?
Duty
to School:
Ø To preserve, protect and
respect the culture and heritage
Ø To respect the National
Flag and National Anthem
Ø To respect and abide by
the School’s policy and guidelines.
Ø To foster tolerance and
mutual respect for all the students irrespective of religion, language or
others.
Ø To safeguard the school
property and maintain the surroundings neat and clean- litter free school.
Ø Not to torture or abuse
your weaker friends.
Ø To render help to the
school, teachers and friends at all times and in times of need.
“Be a GOOD STUDENT not just a Student.” So
you can grow up to become a GOOD Citizen not just a Citizen.”
